How to Reduce Stress Without Breathwork, Meditation, or More Sleep

Stre from work is to be expected. Deadlines, shifting priorities, and people challenges mean there’s always some level of pre ure in the system. But not all stre is the same, and that’s where many leaders get it wrong.

When you or someone on your team says, “I’m stre ed,” it’s natural to want to fix it. The problem is, if you don’t understand the type of stre they’re experiencing, you’ll likely offer a solution that doesn’t actually help.

Fortunately, there’s a different way to think about stre . Leadership expert Amy Leneker offers a powerful reframe: not all stre is the same. And when we treat the specific source of stre with appropriate solutions, instead of generic wellne advice, we can shift from managing stre to reducing it altogether.

The Five Types of Stre at Work

Amy identifies five distinct types of stre that show up in the workplace.

Schedule Stre

Schedule stre is the feeling that there simply isn’t enough time. This is the most visible type, and it shows up when calendars are overloaded and priorities are competing. When this is the i ue, Amy emphasizes that the solution isn’t pushing people to work harder. It’s rethinking how time is structured, which meetings are nece ary, and where unnece ary work can be removed.

Suspense Stre

Suspense stre comes from waiting. This happens when decisions haven’t been made, information hasn’t been shared, or people feel like they’re in the dark. What makes this type of stre particularly challenging is how quickly it erodes trust. Amy notes that silence often gets filled with a umptions, and those a umptions are rarely positive. Even a simple acknowledgment like, “I’ll share what I can as soon as I can,” can significantly reduce that tension.

Social Stre

Social stre  is what happens when relationships at work make things harder. This might be conflict, miscommunication, or just ongoing friction between team members. It’s one of the most draining types of stre , and it rarely resolves itself. Amy highly recommends we addre social stre as soon as po ible. Avoiding it only allows it to grow.

Sudden Stre

Sudden stre arrives when an unexpected i ue suddenly becomes urgent. This is the fire drill that forces people to drop everything and shift focus. Even if it only happens occasionally, Amy explains that it has a disproportionate impact because it breaks momentum and creates ripple effects acro the rest of the work.

Amy recommends leaders pause before pa ing the urgency along. Not everything that feels urgent actually is. And when unexpected, urgent situations are part of the job, the solution is to plan for it. If your team is operating at full capacity all the time, there’s no room to absorb the unexpected, and that’s when stre spikes.

System Stre

System stre is the stre that comes from the way work is structured such as uneven workloads, unclear expectations, and environments where people feel unsupported or even mistreated. It’s often the hardest to addre . It’s also the kind of stre that no amount of time management or wellne initiatives will fix.

While you may not be able to change the entire organization, Amy acknowledges that you can influence the experience within your own team. Clear expectations, consistent follow-through, and addre ing i ues in real time can make a meaningful difference.

What Leaders Can Do to Reduce Stre

We don’t need more tools or workplace meditation hours, says Amy. What we need is to slow down long enough to understand what’s actually driving the stre that we and our team members are experiencing.

Instead of jumping straight into solutions, get curious. Ask questions. Pay attention to patterns. This way you can brainstorm approaches that resolve the root cause.

Often, Amy highlights, what feels overwhelming is a mix of different stre ors layered on top of each other. When you start to untangle them, the path forward becomes much clearer.

It also helps to bring these conversations into the open. When stre is something people can talk about, not something they have to hide, you create the conditions for better problem-solving and stronger trust.

Stre Isn’t Going Away Completely

You’re not going to eliminate all stre from your team’s work, and that’s not the goal. The goal, Amy explains, is to eliminate unnece ary stre and respond to stre when it arises more effectively.

When you understand the different types of stre and take a more thoughtful approach to addre ing it, you help your team stay focused, resilient, and productive even in demanding moments.
