Managing a team requires strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to create a positive, engaging work culture. Surprisingly, these are the same components that are needed for a successful improv skit. In a recent conversation with leadership expert, humorist, and author Joel Zeff, we explored how engaging in improv as a team can be a game-changer for managers looking to build stronger, more collaborative teams.
Connecting Improv Techniques to Leadership
Many people associate improv with comedy, but at its core, improv is about collaboration, adaptability, and trust—skills that are just as crucial in the workplace as they are on stage. According to Joel, the principles of improv offer a powerful framework for effective leadership.
"Improv is about creating opportunities, taking ownership, and supporting your team. When managers apply these principles, they unlock the potential of their people and foster a culture of innovation and engagement," explained Joel. In improv, there’s no script. Performers must listen, react, and build on each other’s contributions. This mirrors the challenges managers face daily, from navigating unexpected problems to inspiring creative solutions.
Leadership is About Setting Others Up for Success
One of the foundational rules of improv is to make your scene partner look good. In the workplace, this translates to setting up your team members for success.
Joel emphasizes that great leaders ask themselves one simple question: “How do I help the people around me be successful?” When managers focus on creating opportunities for their employees to thrive, they build trust, loyalty, and engagement. Joel recommends managers regularly check in with their team members and ask what support they need to succeed.
Whether it’s resources, mentorship, opportunity to attend a conference, or greater encouragement, we’re often able to deliver. These small efforts on our end can have a significant impact on performance and morale.
Fun Fuels Engagement and Retention
Work doesn’t have to be serious all the time. In fact, research shows that employees who have fun at work are more engaged, productive, and loyal. Joel shares how organizations that incorporate humor and play into their culture see increased morale and collaboration.
One example he shares is a company that implemented “Skit Night” at their annual retreat. Teams worked together to create and perform skits, fostering camaraderie and creative problem-solving. While the activity itself wasn’t directly related to work, the bonds formed carried over into everyday collaboration.
Joel suggests looking for simple ways to incorporate fun into your workplace. Whether it’s themed meetings, team-building activities, or simply encouraging humor in daily interactions, creating a lighthearted culture can significantly improve team dynamics.
Celebrate Wins—Big and Small—as Ta-Da Moments
In improv, performers acknowledge and celebrate each other’s contributions with applause and encouragement. Joel believes this same principle should be applied in the workplace. He explains that as children, we regularly had “ta-da moments” where we celebrated and acknowledged our accomplishments.
“Now, most of us go through our workdays without ever getting applause. But appreciation fuels motivation. A simple ‘thank you’ or recognition of someone’s efforts can go a long way,” says Joel.
One way Joel offers for how to do this is to start meetings with a quick round of appreciation. Recognize team members for their efforts, contributions, or progress on a project. This simple practice can build momentum and reinforce a culture of positivity.
Build Stronger Teams Through Trust and Connection
At its core, improv is about trust. Performers must trust their scene partners to build on ideas and support each other. The same is true for successful teams.
Joel points out that strong relationships are built not just through work, but through shared experiences. Laughing together builds bonds and cements messages and memories, similar to how a memory can be attached to a great song. These powerful moments where teams come together outside of work tasks often strengthen collaboration within them. By applying these improv-inspired strategies, managers can create a workplace culture that is not only productive but also engaging, creative, and filled with genuine connection.
