Embrace the Power of a Reset Mindset

With the rapid pace of change, what worked last year or even last month might not work today. The traditional approaches to leadership and problem-solving may no longer suffice. This is where embracing a “Reset Mindset” becomes a game-changer.

I spoke with Penny Zenker, a leading expert in productivity and mindset, on how adopting a reset mindset can empower managers to not only adapt but thrive in dynamic environments.

WHAT IS THE RESET MINDSET

As Penny explains, the reset mindset encourages managers to reassess continuously, adapt strategies, and make decisions based on the latest information and insights. It’s about being intentional with your actions and recognizing when to pause and reassess. This approach ensures that decisions are thoughtful and strategic rather than automatic or impulsive.

A reset mindset can be activated in moments, both big and small, throughout your workday. Whether it’s reevaluating your response after a challenging conversation or reassessing a project’s direction in light of new data, this mindset allows you to stay flexible and thoughtful.

IMPLEMENT THE RESET MINDSET IN YOUR WORKPLACE

Penny outlines a three-step process for implementing the reset mindset which, over time, can become intuitive.

Step 1: Step Back

The first step is to step back and gain clarity on the situation at hand. This involves distancing yourself from the problem, project, person or conflict to view it objectively. For example, if you’re facing a challenging decision, take a moment to pause and reflect on the broader context. What assumptions are you making? What are the potential consequences of your decision?

Stepping back also involves managing your emotions. As Penny notes, high emotions can cloud judgment. When you’re feeling too busy, highly enthusiastic, or adamantly dismissive, those are the moments when you most need to take a step back. By taking a moment to pause, you allow yourself to approach the situation with a clear and calm mind.

Step 2: Get Perspective

Once you’ve stepped back, the next step is to gather perspective. This involves exploring different viewpoints and considering various options before making a decision. For instance, seek input from team members who might have different experiences or insights.

An easy tip Penny offered is to use the “else” approach. Ask yourself, “What else could this mean?” or “Who else might have valuable input?” Simply adding “else” to question words who, what, when, where, why and how can open you up to seeing new or different perspectives.

Step 3: Realign

The final step is to realign your actions with your goals. After gaining clarity and perspective, you’re now ready to ensure that your actions are aligned with your objectives. This step involves making adjustments based on the insights gathered in the previous steps and ensuring that everyone on your team is on the same page.

THE RESET MINDSET IS A WAY OF THINKING

Penny notes the reset mindset is not a one-time activity but an ongoing process—it’s a way of thinking that can transform the way you lead and inspire your team. Incorporating the reset mindset into your management style can significantly enhance your effectiveness as a leader. By fostering a culture of continuous reassessment and adaptability, you empower your team to navigate change, make informed decisions, and act with intention.

The next time you’re faced with a challenge or decision, take a moment to step back, gather perspective, and realign. You might be surprised at how much more effectively you can guide your team towards success.
